Federal funding to State Government schools has increased by 120% since 1996 whilst enrolments have increased by 1.2%. The 65% of students who are in state schools receive 75% of the total taxpayer funding. The recent Investing in Our Schools Programme has resulted in a payment of $1.2 billion to Australian schools. Funding for universities has been at record levels. Total funding for Australian universities will be $14 billion in the current year with 56% coming directly from the Australian Government. Australian universities currently hold more than $7 billion in cash and investments whilst record numbers of Australians are currently studying at university.
